  • Step forward and witness the moment aviation first proved that progress, like trousers, is sometimes best cast bravely aside.

This buoyant tableau celebrates the historic 1785 crossing of the English Channel by French aeronaut Jean-Pierre Blanchard and his American companion Dr. John Jeffries, an unlikely Franco-American alliance united by science, courage, and an increasingly desperate need to lighten the load.

As their gallant balloon drifted stubbornly downward over the cold Channel waters, the pioneers were forced into a most undignified yet decisive act of aeronautical improvisation: overboard went ballast, instruments, provisions… and finally, with heroic reluctance, much of their clothing.

Here, that noble sacrifice is immortalised in glorious theatrical fashion. A top hat bobs triumphantly among the waves, an hourglass marks the shrinking margin for modesty, while discarded personal effects tumble skyward in a silent salute to survival. At the centre, the historic cigarette card floats like a witness to history, proof that great achievements often hang by the thinnest of threads (and sometimes by one’s last remaining garment).

Part adventure, part comedy of manners, and wholly Montague in spirit, this piece reminds us that the conquest of the skies was not always dignified, but it was always determined.
